    About the procedure

    In vitro fertilization (IVF)

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is one of several techniques available to help people with fertility problems have a baby. During IVF, an egg is removed from the woman’s ovaries and fertilised with sperm in a laboratory. The fertilised egg, called an embryo, is then returned to the woman’s womb to grow and develop. It can be carried out using your eggs and your partner’s sperm, or eggs and sperm from donors.

      What happens during IVF

      1
      Stimulation of the ovaries

An in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure begins with ovarian stimulation. There are three protocols for the stimulation process: long, super long and short. First, the woman’s body is prepared for stimulation with the help of drugs. After some time, special medications are used to stimulate the growth of follicles, this stage takes place under ultrasound and hormonal control.

      Puncture of follicles

When the follicles grow to the required size, artificial insemination involves the next stage – anesthesia and, under the control of ultrasound, ovarian puncture is performed. During this procedure, using a special puncture needle, the follicular fluid is extracted from each follicle together with the egg.

      3
      Cultivation of embryos

Specially processed sperm and eggs isolated from the follicular fluid are combined and placed in an incubator with a nutrient medium for fertilization and further development. IVF fertilization involves the cultivation of embryos from 3 to 6 days.

Transfer of embryos into the uterine cavity

A few days after fertilization, the embryos are transferred into the uterine cavity. Unlike the aforementioned follicle puncture, this is an absolutely painless procedure. Under ultrasound guidance, the procedure is performed using a thin elastic catheter. After the transfer, the woman is prescribed drugs that help create conditions for the implantation and development of embryos. According to reviews, this gives good results.

      Diagnosis of pregnancy

The earliest and most reliable method by which IVF pregnancy is determined is today a blood test for HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). Based on a blood test for HCG, pregnancy can be determined already on the 12th day after the embryo transfer. This method in Ukraine is the earliest and most reliable for early diagnosis of pregnancy.

      FAQ

Our job is to make your journey to parenthood as smooth, safe, and stress-free as possible

      What is IVF?

IVF is a method of achieving pregnancy with infertility. With IVF, fertilization takes place outside the woman’s body. For IVF, eggs are removed from the woman’s body, and the man donates sperm.

How does the IVF process take place?

To start IVF, you need to consult a fertility specialist. Before the start of the program, the couple undergoes an examination. Based on the results of the examination, the reproductologist forms the tactics of the IVF program. There are 5 main stages of IVF: stimulation, puncture, fertilization, embryo development, embryo transfer.

What tests do I need to take for IVF?

Analyzes are necessary to exclude contraindications to IVF and to determine the correct tactics for the program. A woman undergoes clinical tests, hormonal examinations, ultrasound and other examinations as indicated. A man takes a spermogram and clinical tests. Analyzes before IVF have a validity period.

      What are the risks?

IVF doesn’t always result in pregnancy, and it can be both physically and emotionally demanding. You should be offered counselling to help you through the process. There are also a number of health risks involved, including:

      • side effects from the medications used during treatment, such as hot flushes and headaches

      • multiple births (such as twins or triplets) – this can be dangerous for both the mother and the children

      • an ectopic pregnancy – where the embryo implants in the fallopian tubes, rather than in the womb

      • ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) – where too many eggs develop in the ovaries

      How safe is IVF?

IVF is generally very safe and most who have it experience no problems with their health or pregnancy. However, there are some risks to be aware of, which include:

      • ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome(a severe reaction to fertility drugs)

      • having a multiple pregnancy or birth (twins, triplets or more), which can cause serious health problems to both mum and babies

      • having an ectopic pregnancy

      • possible birth defects (these are rare and research is still ongoing).

What are the chances of success?

The success rate of IVF depends on the age of the woman undergoing treatment, as well as the cause of the infertility (if it’s known). Younger women are more likely to have a successful pregnancy. IVF isn’t usually recommended for women over the age of 42 because the chances of a successful pregnancy are thought to be too low. Between 2014 and 2016 the percentage of IVF treatments that resulted in a live birth was:

      29% for women under 35

      23% for women aged 35 to 37

      15% for women aged 38 to 39

      9% for women aged 40 to 42

      3% for women aged 43 to 44

2% for women aged over 44

These figures are for women using their own eggs and their partner’s sperm, using the per embryo transferred measure. Maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding alcohol, smoking and caffeine during treatment may improve your chances of having a baby with IVF.
